The National Weather Service in Louisville has issued a Heat Advisory for Central Kentucky, in effect from 1 p.m. Tuesday through 8 p.m. Thursday.
“Right now we’re monitoring, and we might have to extend that into Friday because this pattern that we’re in is a very stagnant pattern,” said NWS Louisville Meteorologist Brian Foster. “Nothing much will change between now and Thursday evening, and we’re expecting heat indices to climb into the low 100s or the mid-100s of values, especially by Wednesday and Thursday afternoon, so the heat impact will probably get a little bit worse by Wednesday and Thursday.”
Foster said heat expected Friday could be impacted by possible storms in the forecast.
With major heat risks possible this week, Foster said anyone without effective cooling or proper hydration could be impacted.
“That means if people don’t take any kind of precautions, they’re going to feel some kind of impact from this and it could be enough to where they start going through signs of heat illnesses, or extreme dehydration,” Foster said. “We want to make sure when we message this that we make sure that people know to drink plenty of water and to take frequent breaks if they have to be outside for extended periods of time.”
Take steps to take care of yourself and to take care of those around you.
“Be sure to check on your neighbors if they don’t have any good working AC units or if they have no AC at all,” Foster said. “Please make sure that they’re okay. Make sure they have access to water as well if you have some to spare, and also make sure to check the backseat of your car, especially if you have kids. “If you’re going shopping, make sure that there’s no kids or pets in your car whenever you’re done, because a lot of people, they get too busy, and an accident happens, so we’re just trying to make sure that people know to take as many precautions as possible, whether they’re traveling in a car or if they’re working outside.”
