Voter registration deadline ahead of May primary is Monday

The primary election in Kentucky is coming up on May 19, and if you have not yet registered to vote, time is running out.

“Monday is the deadline to register to vote,” said Hardin County Clerk Brian D. Smith. “We want people to go ahead and register to vote if they’ve not already, or update their address and any other changes they want to make. They have until April 20 to do that. They can call the county clerk’s office, they can drop in and see us, or they can visit govote.ky.gov.”

As a reminder, if you have already registered and you change your political party affiliation prior to the primary, you will be ineligible to vote in partisan races in May.

Meanwhile, the online mail-in absentee request portal is currently open.

“Those folks who physically cannot come in to vote, maybe they’re going to be out of town, maybe they’re military who are deployed, or maybe they’re a student away at college, they can request that absentee ballot at govote.ky.gov,” Smith said. “We are already mailing those out. In fact, for this primary, we have mailed out more absentee ballots than we did in the presidential primary.”

The request portal closes May 5.

You can view a sample ballot on the county clerk’s office’s website. Find more election dates and information at govote.ky.gov.
