An incident in a Fort Knox motor pool Tuesday resulted in the death of a soldier.
According to a release from the Fort Knox Public Affairs Office, preliminary information indicates engineering equipment fell on the soldier while they were working in the motor pool, a facility “where units maintain and service vehicles, equipment, and machinery.” The soldier’s identity is being withheld for 24 hours following notification of next of kin.
Fort Knox Garrison Commander Colonel David Holstead said in the release: “We are saddened by the death of our own as a result of this tragic event today. Our heart goes out to the Solder’s family and friends as we collectively mourn the loss of one of our teammates.”
Emergency responders were called to the scene at approximately 10:30 a.m. The soldier received emergency medical care before being transported by air to the University of Louisville Hospital, where they were later pronounced dead.
Fort Knox says initial indications are that the incident was accidental, however the incident is being investigated by the Department of the Army Criminal Investigation Division as part of the standard process for investigating soldier fatalities.
